About us
A shared passion for healing and growth.
Elizabeth and Sam McDowell built Wellspring around a simple conviction: people flourish when the whole person is cared for.
Our story
How Wellspring began.
Serving and caring for people has always been at the center of our story. We met as teenagers while attending our local youth ministry, and found ourselves serving our community in a variety of ways. We led small groups in our youth ministry while still in high school, where we quickly discovered a specific passion and calling to help others grow, heal, and change.
Elizabeth grew up as a pastor's kid, and knew from a young age that she was meant to help people. Even as a little girl, she had a knack for helping others feel seen and heard. She once drew a stick-figure picture in her journal of herself as a therapist sitting across from someone on a couch. A dream that, clearly, stuck with her.
Sam spent much of his senior year of high school walking alongside classmates through some of the hardest moments of their young lives. It was then that he decided that his life would be given to help people through the difficult seasons so they could become who they were created to be.
We got married at 20 and 21, full of love, full of faith, and largely unaware of just how much we had to learn. Both of us grew up in broken homes, and neither of us had a clear picture of what a healthy relationship actually looked like. We found ourselves sitting in a counselor's office within six months of our wedding day, unsure of what came next, but willing to try anything to achieve the life and marriage we dreamed of.
What happened in that counseling room changed us.
Our counselor gave language to things we had felt but couldn't name. He offered a perspective we could have never found on our own. He helped us see each other, and ourselves, more clearly. And somewhere in those sessions, something clicked. Not just about our marriage, but about what it meant to sit with someone in the middle of their story and help them find their way through it.
The counseling room didn't birth the calling. It showed us why it mattered.
Since then, our paths have taken different shapes that have only deepened that calling. Elizabeth has worked across multiple private practices in several states, investing deeply in the lives of individuals, couples, and families with a clinically grounded, biblically rooted approach she has carried from the very beginning. Sam has spent nearly 15 years in full-time pastoral ministry, walking alongside teenagers, young adults, and families, watching firsthand what happens when someone has a wise and grounded person in their corner.
Different lanes. The same heartbeat.
The dream of Wellspring has lived in our hearts for years. A place where people could come to find healing, hope, and health in every area of life. A place that takes the whole person seriously. The mind. The heart. The relationships. The faith.
We launched Wellspring Counseling and Wellness in Fort Myers, our hometown, with full hearts and a deep expectation for what God wants to do through this practice. We have seen what happens when people stop white-knuckling life alone and decide to reach out for help.
We have lived it in our own story, and we cannot wait to meet you in yours.
