How I coach

Grace and truth, held together.

After nearly 15 years in pastoral ministry, I've sat with a lot of men. Teenagers learning what it means to be a man. Young adult men searching for identity, direction, and meaning. Husbands working to rebuild trust or learn the language of their wife for the first time. Fathers who feel like they can't quite get it right with their kids, no matter how hard they try. Men quietly battling something they've never said out loud to anyone.

What I've found is this: men don't need someone to fix them. They need someone who will be honest with them, stand with them, and call out from within them the person they've always known they were meant to be.

My coaching is rooted in the principles and design found in the Scriptures. It's built on the conviction that every man was created to lead but must first learn to lead himself. I won't tell you what you want to hear. I'll offer you an honest perspective and help you see the road forward more clearly. And I'll do it the only way that actually works: with grace and truth held together. Grace gives understanding for why you keep doing things you're not proud of. Truth guides you forward with clarity.

In every session, we come back to a simple but demanding question: What can you do right now?

We walk forward together in becoming:

  • The teen who stops drifting and steps forward with intention into manhood.
  • The man who stops giving in to what the world says he should be, and instead has clarity of who he was always meant to be.
  • The husband whose wife feels deeply known and loved—secure and significant.
  • The father whose kids are led well and feel close to him, whose home is predictable and peaceful.
  • The man who once lived in the dark and is now walking in freedom.

Teenage Boys Coaching — The Path to Manhood

Raising boys into manhood is one of the most intentional things a parent can do. It doesn't just happen—it requires a progressive, specific plan that connects a boy to the life he will live as a man.

Many moms are doing their absolute best, especially when dad isn't in the picture. And even when dad is present, many fathers quietly admit they don't know how to navigate this transition, because nobody walked them through it either. That's not a failure. It's a gap that can be closed.

Here's what the data tells us: 1 in 4 boys in America are growing up without a father in the home. And for boys who do have a father present, research shows the average school-age son spends just 30 minutes per week in one-on-one conversation with his dad. Thirty minutes. A boy cannot be transitioned into manhood in thirty minutes a week.

With nearly 15 years in youth ministry, I've walked alongside hundreds of parents and caregivers through exactly this season. As a coach, I work through the areas a young man needs to grasp before he steps into the world:

  • Identity—who he is, not just what he does
  • Purpose & calling—what he was made for
  • Integrity—who he is when no one is watching
  • Relationships—how to treat women and be a loyal friend
  • Emotional intelligence—naming and managing what's inside
  • Work ethic—owning his life
  • Faith—building a personal, owned relationship with God
  • Sexuality & purity—navigating one of adolescence's hardest areas
  • Conflict & communication—learning to resolve instead of escalate
  • Preparing for adulthood—finances, independence, decision-making

A boy doesn't drift into manhood. He is led there. And when no one is leading, he wanders—and wandering boys carry that wandering into adulthood.

If you're a mom, a dad, or a grandparent raising a grandson and wondering if anyone out there understands your situation—I do, and I'd love to walk alongside you. What we work through depends on where he is, but the destination is always the same: a young man who knows who he is, knows what he stands for, and is walking forward with intention into the life God designed him to live.

Men's Coaching

Most men don't end up stuck because they stopped caring. They end up stuck because no one ever handed them a map.

Regardless of age, men can end up with gaps—areas where he knows he could be more, transitions he's navigating without a clear road map, patterns he can't seem to break on his own, questions he's never said out loud to anyone. What makes the difference is never talent, intelligence, or even desire. It's having an honest voice in your corner who has a different vantage point—someone who can reach what's gone quiet and give you what was never handed to you. For a lot of men, that's the real story. Not that they stopped trying, but that they were never shown how.

You love your wife but can't seem to speak her language. In some ways you feel connected, but there are still areas that remain disconnected.

Life feels like a constant swim upstream. You're present and work hard, but it's like you're not making any progress.

Church on Sundays is familiar. Leading spiritually in your home is another story. You know what you believe, but translating that into spiritual leadership for your wife and kids is where it gets blurry.

You're tired of being owned by things you're not proud of. Habits. Patterns. Sins you keep circling back to. You've maybe begun to see some of these in your children.

Pre-Marriage Coaching

Marriage is one of life's most significant decisions, yet most couples spend more time planning the wedding than they do preparing for the marriage.

My premarital coaching is designed to set you and your future spouse up to flourish in the beginning of your marriage. Many couples enter marriage with flawed ideas of what marriage should be, baggage that can cause unnecessary hardship, and blind spots that could majorly impact relationship dynamics.

We will work to lay a strong foundation. Along the way, we'll walk through topics like:

  • Communication patterns
  • Conflict perspective & resolution
  • Family backgrounds
  • Active listening & assertiveness
  • Faith
  • Gender roles & expectations
  • Finances
  • Marriage vision

Premarital coaching is not a checklist item or an easy way to get a discount on your marriage license. This is an invaluable tool that will help you enter marriage with clarity, confidence, and a shared sense of direction.

My credentialing: I am a certified facilitator with Prepare/Enrich—the #1 premarital and marriage assessment tool, trusted by couples for over 45 years. After scheduling your first session, you'll receive the Prepare/Enrich assessment by email. Once completed, I'll have a detailed picture of where you are relationally today, which we'll use as a roadmap throughout our time together. You'll also each receive a workbook that helps translate what we discuss in sessions into everyday life.

My wife and I did our premarital coaching with Sam. Every time we finished a session, we couldn't wait to come back. Sam created conversations that strengthened our relationship and truly prepared us for what a healthy, strong marriage looks like. We highly recommend him.

Is coaching right for you?

Coaching or therapy—how to know.

Coaching and licensed therapy are different things. Here's how to know which one you need.

Licensed therapists are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. If you're navigating clinical depression, trauma, addiction, or a mental health crisis, a licensed therapist or counselor is the right call—and there's no shame in that.

Coaching is for men who are fundamentally okay but know they could be more. You're functional, but stuck. You're showing up, but not fully present. Something isn't working and you haven't been able to figure it out on your own.

Biblical coaching is not licensed mental health therapy and is not a substitute for clinical care.
